TWO ASP RECRUIT CLASSES WRAP-UP STUDIES AND TRAINING – 40 NEW TROOPERS READY FOR SERVICE

July 03, 2008 (LITTLE ROCK) – Forty Arkansas State Police Academy Recruits, representing classes 2008-A and 2008-B graduated this afternoon in ceremonies at the Arkansas State Capitol. The recruits received their oath of service from Fourth Judicial District Judge William Storey of Fayetteville. The “A” class graduates initially reported to classes on February 10, 2008 and have accumulated 1,107 hours of classroom studies and practical training exercises. The class members are each eligible for 41 college credit hours toward a Criminal Justice degree from Black River Technical College at Pocahontas. The “B” class, comprised of recruits who were already certified by the Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards as law enforcement officers, reported to classes at the Arkansas State Police Academy on April 13th and completed a 12-week accelerated classroom and practical training regimen. The recruits accumulated 625 hours of course studies and training exercises and will be eligible for 29 hours of college credit toward a Criminal Justice degree at Black River Technical College. Dustin McDaniel, Arkansas Attorney General, was the keynote speaker addressing the graduates and Colonel Winford E. Phillips, Director of the Arkansas State Police presented the new troopers their commissions. Among other dignitaries present for the ceremonies were members of the Arkansas State Police Commission. Graduates of the 2008-A class are: • Ted L. Jones, 43, of Memphis, Tennessee, who served as Class Leader, will be assigned to Troop J, Van Buren County. Recruit Jones is a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Monticello. • Josh Arnold, 23, of Mountainburg, will be assigned to Troop L, Carroll County. • James Avant, 37, of Bismarck, will be assigned to Troop K, Garland County. • Jake A. Bartlett, 27, of Russellville, will be assigned to Troop A, Pulaski County. Recruit Bartlett is a graduate of the University of Arkansas. • Steve Carlin, 35, of Sherwood, will be assigned to Troop A, Pulaski County. Recruit Carlin is a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. • Joseph L. Gilliam, 29, of Alma, will be assigned to Troop H, Sebastian County. • Kevin M. Growns, 22, of Perryville, will be assigned to Troop E, Lincoln County. Recruit Growns is a graduate of the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton. • James Allen Hamilton, 40, of Fort Smith, will be assigned to Troop I, Newton County. • Moye Hawkins, 25, of Pocahontas, will be assigned to Troop C, Mississippi County. • Karl W. Herbst, 23, of Scranton, will be assigned to Troop A, Lonoke County. • Brian Johnson, 31, of Atkins, will be assigned to Troop J, Van Buren County. • Trey Keller, 30, of Little Rock, will be assigned to Troop A, Pulaski County. Recruit Keller is a graduate of Arkansas State University, Beebe. • Robert Middleton, 29, of Arkadelphia, will be assigned to Troop A, Pulaski County. Recruit Middleton is a graduate of Henderson State University. • Randall G. Murphy, 37, of Cherry Valley, will be assigned to Troop D, Woodruff County. • David Matthew Outlaw, 31, of Hermitage, will be assigned to Troop F, Drew County. • Seth Pinner, 23, of Magnolia, will be assigned to Troop G, Lafayette County. Recruit Pinner is a graduate of Southern Arkansas University. • Chris Spurling, 33, of Oden, will be assigned to Troop K, Montgomery County. • Billy E. Turnipseed, 21, of Hartford, will be assigned to Troop H, Logan County. • Mark S. Vavak, 38, of Holcomb, Missouri, will be assigned to Troop C, Clay County. Recruit Vavak is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University. • Michael R. Woodward, 38, of Batesville, will be assigned to Troop F, Calhoun County. Graduates of the 2008-B class are: • Brad Cartwright, 31, of Sherwood, who served as class leader, will be assigned to Troop A, Pulaski County. Recruit Cartwright is a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. • Corwin H. Battle, 27, of Jonesboro, will be assigned to Troop G, Hempstead County. Recruit Battle is a graduate of Arkansas State University and American Military University in Manassas, Virginia. • Michael D. Bowman, 37, of Columbia, South Carolina, will be assigned to Troop H, Crawford County. • Chris Brackett, 37, of Lockesburg, will be assigned to Troop G, Sevier County. • William Jayson Crabb, 33, of Russellville, will be assigned to Troop K, Garland County. • Donald R. Crow, 29, of Fountain Hill, will be assigned to Troop F, Ashley County. • David A. Davenport, 26, of Phoenix, Arizona, will be assigned to Troop D, Woodruff County. • Paul B. Fry, 36, of Gainesville, Missouri, will be assigned to Troop A, Lonoke County. • Craig R. Griggs, 33, of Elkins, will be assigned to Troop E, Jefferson County. Recruit Griggs is a graduate of Mount Olive College in Mount Olive, North Carolina. • Christopher S. Harper, 38, of Gurdon, will be assigned to Troop G, Nevada County. • Benjamin Harrison, 41, of North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, will be assigned to Troop K, Montgomery County. • Joshua M. Heckel, 27, of Pearcy, will be assigned to Troop K, Garland County. Recruit Heckel is a graduate of Arkansas Tech University and the University of Cincinnati. • Alan C. Johnson, 29, of Yellville, will be assigned to Troop A, Pulaski County. • Thomas Lopez, 37, of Windham, New York, will be assigned to Troop A, Pulaski County. • Sammy M. Norris, 33, of Monticello, will be assigned to Troop F, Chicot County. • Kyle D. Peek, 29, of Magnolia, will be assigned to Troop G, Hempstead County. • Jeffrey D. Plouch, 27, of Little Rock, will be assigned to Troop A, Saline County. • John W. Qualls, 46, of Evening Shade, will be assigned to Troop C, Mississippi County. • Charles Maurice Smith, 37, of Stuttgart, will be assigned to Troop E, Arkansas County. • Michael R. Tompkins, 27, of Brosley, Missouri, will be assigned to Troop C, Mississippi County. Upon reporting to duty at local troop headquarters, the new troopers will be placed with a certified departmental Field Training Officer (FTO). The graduates will work in tandem with their FTO for a six to eight week transitional period prior to being released for duty in their respective counties of assignment.
