Special Agents of the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division are investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred at approximately 11:30 last night (Tuesday, December 11, 2018) in Conway County.

An unidentified man died after he reportedly brandished a knife at a local law enforcement officer following a law enforcement vehicle pursuit.

A Pope County Deputy was attempting to make a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by the unknown individual along Interstate 40. The individual failed to stop, and continued traveling east on Interstate 40 into Conway County.

According to initial statements, upon coming to a stop the individual stepped out of the vehicle armed with a knife. A Pope County Deputy fired on the individual, who was pronounced dead at the scene.  The body will be transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory for positive identification and examination.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident. Questions relating to the identity of law enforcement officer or their administrative status should be directed to the Pope County Sheriff’s Office.

Upon completion of the investigation, state police special agents will submit an investigative file to the Pope and Conway County prosecuting attorneys for consideration to determine whether use of deadly force by a law enforcement officer was justified as defined by state laws.
